Why are Compression Garments for Lymphedema so important?

Compression treatment reduces swelling caused by a build up of lymph fluid (lymphedema). It puts pressure on the area of swelling. The pressure needs to be even but firm on the tissues in the affected area.

The pressure helps the trapped lymph fluid to flow through the lymph vessels. The compression garment or bandages also act as an extra force for the muscles to work against. This helps the fluid to drain out of the area.

The garments should be worn during the day as soon as possible in the morning and removed at night. They should be worn when doing any form of exercise.

The garments vary in how much pressure they put on the bodily tissues. They should:

  • cover the whole area of the swelling
  • allow normal movements
  • not have any baggy or loose areas
  • be comfortable, giving firm support that is not too tight
  • be chosen based on the patient’s needs
  • be replaced every 4 to 6 months – they lose shape with washing and then apply an uneven pressure

The compression garment should be comfortable and should not cause any pain, numbness or tingling. It should be removed if it causes discomfort or pain, and your lymphedema specialist should be contacted as soon as possible.

Compression garments help to stop lymphedema from getting worse. They can reduce mild swelling.

Keeping compression garments in good condition

Two garments are required, one for wearing and one for washing. It’s important to follow the washing instructions using a mild washing powder or liquid. It should be dried away and away from direct heat.

You should get measured every few months to ensure the lymphedema is stable and that your garment fits well. See your doctor, nurse or physiotherapist if you think the garment isn’t fitting correctly.
